With Becky and Simon moving house we have acquired their old glass patio table. We had to take it apart to get it in the car but we've yet to put it back together.

Continued using the new boards to improve the beds. The beds near the cemetery wall were most in need of refurbishment, followed by the small fruit-cage. Before................ After................ Charged batteries and went down just for an hour around lunchtime in order to finish off one of the bottom beds by the cemetery wall.
Went down for 10:00AM to start constructing new beds with the boards we've just purchased. To be honest, apart from all the hassle, the boards are in excellent condition, if a little damp. First thing to do was to spread them out to give them the opportunity to dry a little. Before and after -- constructing the new beds........... The very dry area down by the Cemetery wall is the main area that needs revamping. Unfortunately the batteries died before we could finish but we managed to do a lot of preparation work. New delivery date for scaffolding boards so went down again. Once again we're lucky that the weather is very pleasant for March so plenty to do while we're waiting. Continued with re-netting the large fruit cage for a start. Gave the blueberry baths a good soaking. Filled up the water-butts. The way the weather is we might need to do some watering sooner rather than later. Some of the beds needed digging over. And finally got round to re-laying the slabs in the eating area. While we were doing these little jobs, still no sign of the scaffolding boards. Called builder only to be told that his van was in for it's MoT!. Not happy is an understatement, so went home to cancel purchase on Ebay and get a PAYPAL refund - and probably put a few choice words on their website. Went home and raised a refund request on Ebay and what do you know, received a call from the builder to day the boards will be delivered by 4:00PM today. Don't know whether it was the threat of losing his 100% feedback score but the scaffolding boards were delivered at 4:00PM with no delivery charge. All's well that ends well............. possibly.
Ordered some scaffolding boards to finish off the beds so that they all look the same. Weather is forecast nice for the next ten days so.took the opportunity to tidy up the plot. We'd also bought about 50m of netting to re-do the large fruit cage as there were a few holes appearing. Moved and tidied some old wood. Moved one of the water butts to make it more accessible. Scaffolding boards hadn't arrived by 1:00PM so rang up and was told he'd forgotten all about it!! Luckily the day wasn't wasted as bits and pieces to do down there. Made new delivery date for Monday 25th March. Went down to "riddle" some compost ready for planting carrots etc. Had a few spells of rain! Did manage to sift quite a bit of compost though. We went down the allotment this morning with the sole intention of picking some winter vegetables but not long after we got down there a lorry load of fresh chippings arrived. They weren't brilliant but they were better than what was already there so we spent the next two hours laying down about three-quarters of the paths with nice fresh chippings. We picked some parsnips............ Picked a few leeks............ ........and a very small amount of purple broccoli. We weren't too sure about the celeriac as it looked a little bit "woody" so we just picked the one for now to see what it was like. And then the chippings arrived so we thought we'd better concentrate on the paths. A vast improvement. |
