In the seating area, where the artichokes used to be, we planted Ipomoea next to the rose and we also finally gave up on the Clematis and dug it up.
Planted peas around the bean sticks.
And we planted the first sweetcorn of the season.
No sign of Lockdown ending any time soon, although we are being given a bit more freedom of movement so might start spending more time down here and, for the first time this year, we had fish/pastie and battered chips down here as the chip shop in Wynall Road has jut reopened. What with Coronavirus and the exceptional April weather (sunniest and driest April on record) we've been down the allotment probably more than we would normally this time of year. As a result we're pretty much on top of things. However, there's a week of unsettled weather and plenty of rain now forecast so this may be the last vsit for a week or so. Beds are all weeded and topped with compost so the compost bin is now back in use. The potatoes were poking through so covered them wth soil again. Dug up some of the most persistant and larger weeds growing along the edge of the allotment. Planted some peas and watered them in.......... ...............also some beans. The rose cuttings planted a couple of years ago are now almost shrub-like. Had a fantastic week in North Wales; wall to wall sunshine and temperatures in the mid twenties every day. Fortunately there was some rain here during the week, but not enough. Spent over four hours mostly watering but also did a bit of weeding as well. Everything is coming along wonderfully. Carrots are still doing well - unlike last year. Asparagus have gone berserk, but our asparagus season is now over anyway so we just have to let it do it's own thing. Peas and beans are OK......... ............as are the tomatoes and potatoes. Thought it was about time the bottom paths were weeded. Looks like summer has finally arrived. It hasn't rained for about four or five days and it's forecast dry and moderately warm for the next week at least. We thought that if it's going to remain dry we should water what's already planted and fill the water-butts up. We got down to the plot about a quarter to nine, with a little helper! Although we didn't bring any peas down we put up some climbing netting in readiness. Although the two oak trees that we planted near the cemetery wall are thriving the buddleia is looking very sorry for itself (think it's dead!). The potatoes have suddenly gone a bit beserk........... .............and we're going to try a cut-grass mulch on them. Tomatoes are looking good going into June. However, the carrots appear to have vanished and we've no idea why. We'll plant a few more here and see what happens. Wrapped some thin netting around the bean plot for the peas to grow up. Managed to get a bed of parsnips in as well, even though we were only down there for an hour and a half. And finally, the wild garden is looking spectacular and attracting loads of bees. Poppies especially are looking good. |
