Went down literally for half an hour just to check up on things prior to going on holiday on Saturday. This blog is actually written on the Saturday as I didn't get time to update before then. Spent nearly seven hours down the allotment yesterday, mostly doing general tidying and maintenance. Managed to get quite a lot done so arrived back at home a little worn out and completely forgot we'd got tickets to see Bob Flowerdew in Kinver. Most annoying. Anyway, here's some photo's of what we got done and as you can see it was wall to wall sunshine all day. Finished off the area where the bricks etc are kept by screwing a pallet into place. Gave the shed another coat of creosote. Re-creosoted the shed as buds were starting to appear on the vine. And talking of buds, something appears to be happening in the asparagus bed! Did a few smaller but necessary jobs like netting the rhubarb to keep it off the path........... ......and re-doing the "office" lid to keep water from collecting. Replaced some of the wood round the beds and removed the bricks some of them were resting on. Onions are looking superb and we picked a bucketful of parsnips (beneath all that foliage. And finally, the compost is now over halfway up the cemetery wall. First proper after work visit. Stayed for a couple of hours planting onions and potatoes, watering, putting netting up (to keep our four-legged friends out) and, as the weathers now improved, took the plastic bag covers off the water butts. We replaced the old woody lavender by the cemetery wall. The fruit blossom is really coming out now after a few days of sunshine. And still had time for a cuppa. First real full day of 2015. Had a McDonalds for lunch and stayed down until 4:15. Another maintenance day mostly although we did pick half a dozen extremely large parsnips..... Most of the day was taken up with replacing the shed door. The old door was a bit flimsy so made a more sturdy one. A couple of very minor problems but otherwise went well. Quick coat of preservative and the new door looks as if it's been there all along. Did some new net-support sticks round near the rhubarb bed. And, as I've already said, Lola paid us a visit...... and went to see Roy!!! Some blossom just starting to appear on the fruit. Went down, initially just for a couple of hours, to do a bit more general maintenance on the plot. Weather forecast wasn't brilliant but at least it was supposed to be dry. As it turned out it brightened up to become quite a pleasant day so we stayed all day, having a chicken and bacon ranch subway for lunch. Main tasks were to tidy up where all the bricks are kept; by the comfrey juice and hosepipe, and to get the lengths of wood off the runner bean bed. Planted a new lavender by the cemetery wall and put some new edging stones down - needs finishing off though. Asparagus doesn't appear to be doing much. No little green shoots appearing yet. Still, Monty Don says it can take three years or more so we'll see what happens when the weather warms up. Hoping to replace the shed door in the not too distant future so took some measurements and pictures. Hoping to make it in a similar style. ....... and finally; the compost is looking OK but I don't think we'll be using any more of it this season. I'll give until the Autumn and then I'll move it around and turn it. May be able to empty one of the bays by then.
