We just popped down for a couple of hours weeding to get on top of it, especially the mares-tail. While we were there we had a couple of visitors..............

Finally, we get some rain; only around 10mm over a couple of days but it's much needed for the plants. We came down primarily to continue with the weeding and as the weather forecast is for showers over the next few days we felt it best to come down when we can. We weeded the fruit cage as that was quite overgrown with weeds in one area. The rain has done the pumpkins and squashes good, especially havng fed them last week. The carrots too, and they haven't even been fed. The tomatoes were fed last week and they've shot up in the rain. The lower bed was badly in need of weeding. Before.... After............ The artichokes are providing plenty of food for the bees. We've had up to eight bees on one flower at the same time. And of course we picked some produce. Well, despite heavy rain and storms being forecast for the last four days we've had nothing, so it's down to water again and this time we need to fill the water butts up.
More produce picked including some very decent potatoes. This hot spell seems to be continuing so it's off to water before everything shrivels up! The temperature is still in the high twenties to low thirties even though we went down late afternoon, so we just quickly watered and picked a few items. We'll have to fill the water butts up next time.
We are currently in the middle of a hot, dry spell and temperatures for the next several days are forecast to be consistently in the high-twenties.
As in previous occasions like this it seems wise to come down and water later in the evening. We did pick some produce though. Louise has had her conservatory roof replaced so it seemed a good idea to use the old plastic roofing as new covers for the water-butts. Before and after: The artichokes are looking superb; which is slightly annoying as we don't really like them. These are rhubarb leaves annoyingly left scattered on the path by an adjoining plot holder. Well, I think that's about it - we have now planted everything we intend to grow this year. Last to go in, today, was the celery. Carrots are looking good. The "Heath-Robinson" tomato frame appears to be doing it's job. We're leaving the artichokes for the birds this year. They do look pretty magnificent. Beetroot's are looking good too. We've temporarily fixed the fence collapse separating us from Ryan. And finally, here's some produce we picked today. Huge number of redcurrants. |
