This hot spell seems to be continuing so it's off to water before everything shrivels up! The temperature is still in the high twenties to low thirties even though we went down late afternoon, so we just quickly watered and picked a few items. We'll have to fill the water butts up next time.

As can be seen here, a lot of weeding now required. But there's also a lot of produce to be picked. The asparagus ferns are in full bloom. The sweetcorn has reached it's maximum height now I think. The squirrels lie in waiting for the cobs......... Potatoes and carrots are doing well. The onions have lay down flat so they're gong to have to be picked at some point. And this is what we picked today. What with Becky moving house, the school holidays, and just things generally , we haven@t done anything significant down the allotment for three weeks. Luckily the weather has been in our favour and even though we have some decent hot weather it's also rained at the appropriate time. Just spent an hour down there today and picked 5lb of potatoes and 8lb of courgettes. The courgettes seem to be all growing at the same time but not getting excessively large. Picked some other produce as well. The combination of hot sunny weather alongside regular rainfall has created an impenetrable jungle between the fruit cage and the compost heap and shed. The weather definitely can't make it's mind up this year. After a couple of days rain ten days ago it hasn't rained since so we went and watered and picked another decent amount of produce.
Potatoes especially are possibly the best we've ever had - they taste delicious. Down yet again to water. I think we may have rescued about 40% of the leeks but everything else is looking good with all this sunshine. Picked some more produce.
With other commitments such as visiting my mom, meeting up with Carol and Ron and looking after the grandchildren, we're now having to go down and water whenever the opportunity occurs. Went down this evening for a couple of hours and gave everything a good soaking but the leeks aren't coping at all. Probably lost about half of them so far but the ones that are left are not growing significantly.
Today there was a little bit of cloud cover and the temperature, at 25 degrees, was down on previous days, but the forecast is for it to climb back up into the thirties later this week. Picked a bit of fruit and veg but nothing major. Mange-touts are obviously loving this weather. |
