We seem to be visiting the plot more regularly this year than in previous years just to pick.
Less than an hour this afternoon and here's what we got.

Well, finally a reasonable amount of rain. Had about eighteen hours of rain over Thursday/Friday. Not torrential but steady; enough to mean that we didn't have to water today. It did mean we had a lot of Mares-Tail to deal with though. We also had some visitors......... Also had a visit from the worlds largest moth. No idea of the species but it was nearly the size of the palm of your hand. And it all meant we were able to pick some more produce including some potatoes, of which the quality was superb but alas the quantity not nearly so. To finish some general photos showing how some of the produce is faring - mostly really well. We even have a decent amount of carrots now. Still no substantial rain and the grass now looks like straw but at least we've had some. Picked some more produce and just watered what was really flagging but if there's no more rain by the weekend it's going to have to be a mammoth watering session. Still no sign of prolonged rain so had to water again as this is the last chance before Katie's wedding. No accompanying photos but we did pick the rest of the red gooseberries, more blackberries and raspberries, and a load of blackcurrants,
This summer is rapidly turning out to be the hottest and driest since we had the allotment in 2006. Came down straight after work and watered solid for two and a half hours. A conservative estimate would be that we used at least 2,500 litres of water. In between filling the water butts we picked a load more soft fruit and the red gooseberries are easily the best we've ever had. The raspberries too are some of the best ever. Having a fairly decent summer so far, but still some way to go. Had to water and feed everything which used all the water-butts worth of water. Took a couple of hours and next time we come down we need to refill them before we even start. Picked some more produce too. Well we had over 24hours of continuous rain in the week, which sounds good but it was light rain at best and mostly drizzle; but it was over a sustained period. Anyway, we went down to inspect and everything seems to be doing OK so spent forty-five minutes picking - see photo below. Pumpkin's doing nicely.
And we finally have some carrots growing at attempt number four..... |
