Apart from watering we also planted some beetroot.
We weeded the carrot bed and, lo and behold, discovered some carrots.
The poppies are coming into flower.
It's the last day of May and with the temperature due to hit the mid to high twenties centigrade yet again we decided to get up early and go down to water before the sun reaches it's peak. Apart from watering we also planted some beetroot. We weeded the carrot bed and, lo and behold, discovered some carrots. The poppies are coming into flower.

With two days still left in May it's been declared the driest, warmest and sunniest May on record. We went down after 5:00PM to do some digging, weeding and planting; it's just too warm earlier in the day. Potatoes are doing well............ ............but the onions aren't happy. Dug five channels in the top bed for the celery. Had to get rid of more mares-tail first though! Also planted some tomatoes. Broad beans seem to enjoy this weather. "Spot the carrot!" We also put some more wallflowers in. The artichokes seem to like the dry bed at the bottom of the plot. Mind you, the Goji berry is most definitely NOT happy. No change in the weather and no change to the outlook. In fact, if anything, it's gradually getting warmer and sunnier. Mind you, the sweetcorn loves it.
Becky bought Sophie down to help us with watering. We've only had 7% of the average rainfall this month so far and the temperatures and sunshine have been more like June/July than May. The onions look somewhat fried! But never mind.......... Sophie to the rescue, watering the artichokes. Potatoes seem to be doing OK in this heat. We recently planted a couple of pumpkins; they'll definitely need watering. Picked some rhubarb just before we left. Lockdown is continuing but we have had to come down just two days after our previous visit because we have had some unseasonably dry weather for the last two months and everwhere is currently pretty parched. So we watered what is already planted and filled up the water-butts too. The rose in the picnic area is pretty well fully recovered and established now. Picnic area itself is looking pretty "green"............. ...........and the comfrey bed is looking colourful. The artichokes seem happy in ther new home. Everything appears to be thriving in the "nursery" bed. We planted some Viburnum at the back o the carrots. No sign of Lockdown ending any time soon, although we are being given a bit more freedom of movement so might start spending more time down here and, for the first time this year, we had fish/pastie and battered chips down here as the chip shop in Wynall Road has jut reopened. In the seating area, where the artichokes used to be, we planted Ipomoea next to the rose and we also finally gave up on the Clematis and dug it up. Planted peas around the bean sticks. And we planted the first sweetcorn of the season. Went down today partly because the exceptional, unseasonal, weather that we have been experiencing since lockdown began is due to be replaced in less than forty-eight hours by cold, wet and strong winds. The thermometer down in the seating area was today showing 26*C by 11:00AM; day after tomorrow is between 7*C and 10*C with possible frosts and even a covering of snow!! Did a bit more weeding (there's always weeding to do!) and mounded up the potatoes, probably for the last time this season. Weeded the asparagus bed and harvested what was there - couple of meals worth I think. Picked some rhubarb too,........ Seven weeks of Lockdown have now been endured, though luckily the weather for the most part has been good. Inconvenient (and necessary) as things have been, it has given us the perfect opportunity to get on top of things early. We spent over two hours today weeding and generally tidying up and doing our best to try and eradicate, as much as possible, the huge amount of mares-tail that is springing up. On top of that though I did put a new bolt on the fruit cage. Dead-headed the Pulmineria (Soldiers and Sailors) to stop the seeds spreading. We moved a couple of Viburnams. From here.......... .......... to here. Took two hours to remove the mares-tail from just this bed - and it'll probably be back within a couple of weeks. The "Wild" bed, where the comfrey is, is looking fantastic at the moment. Following a week of seasonal weather we went down to do some weeding and general tidying up. It's amazing how many weeds can grow in just a few days, especially the mares-tail. Potatoes were growing in the bed where we planted them last year. Typical, they were growing at least as good as this years even though we'd done our best to get rid of them completely. These are this years potatoes; growing well, toch wood. Asparagus, too,is doing OK. While we were working down there a load of fresh chippings was delivered. They weren't the best quality but we re-did the eating area and round by the compost bin. |
