![]() Basically went down for an hour and a half just to feed and water as it hasn't rained for a while. Did clear the strawberry bed as well though; dug it over and planted a bed of sweetcorn. Picked some fruit while we were there - seems to be ripening quite quickly.

![]() Spent a couple of hours attending to the water-butts. We'd poured pond cleaner in them because during the mild winter a green algae had appeared in them all. It looked as though they would all need a thorough cleaning out but luckily they weren't too bad. We took the opportunity to move the water-butt that was down by the wall as that one tended to attract a lot of snails and slugs. ![]() We moved it up to between the large fruit cage and the rhubarb and then proceeded to fill all the butts while watering at the same time. We'll have to come down again in three days if the weather stays like this. ![]() We picked a few raspberries for good measure. They seem to have satrted ripening early this year but we have had some decent weather recently. ![]() Down the allotment for eight hours today and also picked our first fruit of the season - redcurrants. ![]() Probably wouldn't have been quite so long down there if there hadn't been a delivery of chippings that were the best we've had for a couple of years. Usually the chippings are about 70% leaves and 30% wood but this lot, as can be seen from the pictures, was about 60% wood and 40% leaves. ![]() Put new netting round the large fruit cage. ![]() Made a new door for it as well. ![]() Planted and shaded the celery. ![]() Celeriac's taken well. ![]() Potatoes are flowering so we had a look but they're only the size of marbles. ![]() The Goji Berry doesn't look too happy for some reason. It seems very woody at the base, though there's a bit more greenery higher up. ![]() Pinned netting over the top of the large fruit cage so that the roof is done ready for the sides to be completed on Thursday. ![]() Planted a bed of cabbages, then watered them in and then netted them as well. ![]() There was a rogue plant in with the cabbages so we put it in the asparagus bed and we'll see what it turns into! ![]() Planted some celeriac in the top bed and watered it in. ![]() The whole plot is looking good now; we're pretty much on top of everything and today we weeded the top bed that was by far the worst eyesore. We lay some black membrane down and planted red cabbages and some ordinary cabbages. Put the rest of the tomatoes in and planted the YACON that we bought from Gardeners World Live. Weeded a couple of other beds and that was about it so the photo's that follow just summarise the state of the plot as it is today. ![]() This is the Yacon, bless it's little cotton socks. It's supposed to be like a sweet potato. ![]() Definitely think the carrots have had it. ![]() The potatoes have suddenly gone a bit beserk........... ![]() .............and we're going to try a cut-grass mulch on them. ![]() Tomatoes are looking good going into June. ![]() However, the carrots appear to have vanished and we've no idea why. We'll plant a few more here and see what happens. ![]() Wrapped some thin netting around the bean plot for the peas to grow up. ![]() Managed to get a bed of parsnips in as well, even though we were only down there for an hour and a half. ![]() And finally, the wild garden is looking spectacular and attracting loads of bees. ![]() Poppies especially are looking good. |
