As we go away in a week we decided to go down and pick everything we can; especially as the weather has been dry and warm recently and is likely to change any day now. The photos below are the result.

We've been cutting down the pyracantha hedge out the front and have shredded a large proportion of it so we took it down the allotment to go on the compost heap. Picked some produce and took a few photos.
Went down for less than an hour just to pick what we could before the arrival of Hurricane Bertha; well, what was left of her after crossing the Atlantic, anyway. JUST beat the rain.....................
Rained all day yesterday (Saturday) so just popped down this morning to pick some produce - see pictures. Loads of blackcurrants but what was left of the blackberries had a lot of ants on them.
After pruning the grapevine rather drastically the grapes themselves have almost doubled in size. Popped down for a couple of hours to water and pick more produce. We've had nearly a fortnight of scorching weather, with no end in sight. Dug up the potatoes in one bed and cleared the tops of them in the other, but left the actual potatoes in the ground for now as we got nearly two bucketfuls of spuds from the remains of one bed. Noticed that the sweetcorns are producing flowers in their middles now.
![]() A week ago it was lovely and warm; now it's struggling to hit double figures and it's rained for more than half of the last 72 hours. Just took the compost bins down today, but had a look around. There's a few carrots coming, but only about half of them. ![]() Beans look OK. ![]() Radishes as well look OK. ![]() Both beds of potatoes are coming on well. ![]() Asparagus looks a bit spindly but should be ok. ![]() Winter onions are also doing well........... ![]() ........as are the ordinary onions. ![]() Plenty of flowers on the blackberries. ![]() Finally, just to emphasise the amount of rain we've had over the last three days: we haven't seen lying water like this in a while. ![]() Today and tomorrow were forecast to be the hottest days of the year so far and the cloudless sky seemed to bear that out. ![]() Another day for getting some bigger jobs done so brought all the tools along again. ![]() Secured some more scaffolding planks down to mark the bed edges. As can be seen by the following photos the ones that we've completed look good. ![]() The asparagus bed now has some asparagus plants in it. ![]() The strawberries have been covered over. ![]() Beans are coming on nicely.......... ![]() ....and the rhubarb is getting bigger by the day. ![]() The warm weather is also doing wonders for the potatoes. ![]() Finally, it was so hot I even brought down a hat to wear. Thank God we were on our own down this end. ![]() Next few days are supposed to be the best of the year so far. Another full day down here, and another pie and chips lunch. ![]() Spent the day re-doing the wooden borders of some of the plots........ ![]() .....and weeding......... ![]() ....and these are the results. ![]() Did the beans as well. ![]() Potatoes are doing well too. ![]() Went down late morning but the signs weren't good for a nice day even though the weather forecast said "sunny spells". ![]() Weeded a couple of beds and erected the bean canes. ![]() Finished off the end of the bean bed with a decent piece of wood. ![]() Stayed down for dinner, but not exactly fish and chips or a Subway........ ![]() Quite a few people down here considering the weather but it never got any better than this. Cleared some of the larger weeds and added some more chippings to the paths; but that was it really. ![]() The large fruit cage was leaning somewhat so we reinforced the worst corner by replacing the post. ![]() The finished post. ![]() We replaced several of the bed edges and ends. In this one we then planted some early potatoes. ![]() There was a third of a bed of onions which we filled with a couple of early varieties; Hercules and Sturon. ![]() Laid some black matting on to the bean bed to suppress weeds in preparation for planting. The bean trenches were prepared a couple of months ago. |
