We've been down a couple of times recently but it was just to pick what was ready and each visit was barely ten minutes, so no blog was done, Below is some of the produce we've picked over the last couple of weeks and a view of very full compost bins,
Following some extensive pruning and cutting back in the garden we had nine bags of material for the compost bins.

Went down today to feed some of the veg and water pretty much everything and to pick whatever is available to be picked.
We have now collected all the potatoes from the one bed and collected all of the blackberries. Note that we've also been down a couple of times in the last fortnight but purely to pick so I didn't bother with the blog. Produce pictures below. We're keeping on top of the picking this year. Small amounts but more frequent visits. We've been down and picked three times in the last seven days. These are the results......
Despite the temperature still being 30*C at 7:00PM we went and picked some more produce; although we did stop for a McFlurry on the way back.
Just picked, nothing else; and what we picked is below. As we go away in a week we decided to go down and pick everything we can; especially as the weather has been dry and warm recently and is likely to change any day now. The photos below are the result.
Went down for less than an hour just to pick what we could before the arrival of Hurricane Bertha; well, what was left of her after crossing the Atlantic, anyway. JUST beat the rain.....................
Rained all day yesterday (Saturday) so just popped down this morning to pick some produce - see pictures. Loads of blackcurrants but what was left of the blackberries had a lot of ants on them.
After pruning the grapevine rather drastically the grapes themselves have almost doubled in size. ![]() The whole plot is looking good now; we're pretty much on top of everything and today we weeded the top bed that was by far the worst eyesore. We lay some black membrane down and planted red cabbages and some ordinary cabbages. Put the rest of the tomatoes in and planted the YACON that we bought from Gardeners World Live. Weeded a couple of other beds and that was about it so the photo's that follow just summarise the state of the plot as it is today. ![]() This is the Yacon, bless it's little cotton socks. It's supposed to be like a sweet potato. ![]() Definitely think the carrots have had it. ![]() Nearly the end of February and after the wettest winter on record we actually have a nice day in store. ![]() Removed the top layer from the blueberry containers (bath and two pots) and added an ericaceous feed and compost. ![]() Dug a couple of bean trenches and added a bag of manure. ![]() This is our seventh full year and the soil in the beds now is looking in excellent condition. ![]() Tidied up the lower fruit cage; which is leaning precariously. We've ordered some new netting for it for this year but when that goes tatty the whole cage will need rebuilding. ![]() Pruned the grapevine before any buds appear. It was threatening to completely engulf the shed. ![]() Cut virtually every stem back to two buds. ![]() Compost bins are also going to need looking at before next autumn. ![]() It's not altogether too clear from these two photo's but a large branch has broken off during the bad storms and if we have any more severe weather it may well fall to the ground. ![]() The branch in question is right above the back of the compost area, backing on to Lance's plot; could land either side if it does go! ![]() Went down the allotment just to weed and tidy as many beds as possible and to spread what compost and manure was left onto some of the beds. ![]() The following photos show how many beds are now tidy and (fairly) weed free. ![]() Notice how red the leaves on the blueberries have gone. ![]() Cabbages are looking exceptional this year. ![]() More of the grapes have gone purple but not really enough have done so to do anything with them; which is a shame because there are dozens of bunches - even if most of them are about the size of my little fingernail. They are extremely juicy though. ![]() Finally, just for comparison (and future reference) there now follows a series of pictures of Barry's plot, next door to ours. |
