![]() Down the allotment for eight hours today and also picked our first fruit of the season - redcurrants. ![]() Probably wouldn't have been quite so long down there if there hadn't been a delivery of chippings that were the best we've had for a couple of years. Usually the chippings are about 70% leaves and 30% wood but this lot, as can be seen from the pictures, was about 60% wood and 40% leaves. ![]() Put new netting round the large fruit cage. ![]() Made a new door for it as well. ![]() Planted and shaded the celery. ![]() Celeriac's taken well. ![]() Potatoes are flowering so we had a look but they're only the size of marbles. ![]() The Goji Berry doesn't look too happy for some reason. It seems very woody at the base, though there's a bit more greenery higher up.

![]() Pinned netting over the top of the large fruit cage so that the roof is done ready for the sides to be completed on Thursday. ![]() Planted a bed of cabbages, then watered them in and then netted them as well. ![]() There was a rogue plant in with the cabbages so we put it in the asparagus bed and we'll see what it turns into! ![]() Planted some celeriac in the top bed and watered it in. This blog should have been dated Saturday 27th October 2012 but I've only just got round to writing it due to being irretrievably sidetracked. Somehow, in broad daylight, and without being seen, someone stole Janice's handbag. It wasn't so much the value of what was taken as the inconvenience of cancelling all the cards and replacing them; not to mention various vouchers and tickets that had no value to anyone else. I could go on but......... ![]() We'd spent the day tidying some of the empty beds and preparing for the winter....... ![]() As you can see from these photos we cleared several beds and weeded pretty much all the paths. ![]() We picked the celeriac; though there wasn't that much to dig up really. ![]() Tidied up the strawberries..... ![]() Still a stack of leeks to pull up.... ![]() Even at the end of October there were still a few roses looking extremely good. ![]() ...and, of course, the compost has never looked so full. ![]() Been a while since the weather was kind enough to allow two consecutive days down the allotment,................. and we now have a friend keeping an eye on the weeding! ![]() As you can see by the compost heap there was an awful lot of weeding to be done. ![]() We cut some of the comfrey back and laid it as a mulch on the tomatoes. It's supposed to be good to let comfrey decompose back into the soil as it's packed full of nutrients. ![]() Pretty much given up on the pumpkin. Something's been having a go at it but we'll leave it and see if it picks up at all. ![]() These two photos show that the other bed of tomatoes isn't doing as bad as you might expect either. ![]() Potatoes too aren't completely a washout. ![]() Beans are a long way behind where they should be but if the weather suddenly improved for a prolonged spell............................... ![]() Planted some celeriac today. See how that takes to the cold and wet!! ![]() Celery seems to OK though................. ![]() .......... as do the leeks. ![]() The boysenberry in the fruit cage appears to be trying to make a bid for freedom. No point cutting it back as it is absolutely loaded with fruit. ![]() The wild garden area has, well, lived up to it's name though not many of the wild-flower seeds we sowed seem to have grown. ![]() I'll finish off with a couple of general shots across the allotments from the car park area as it's such a sunny day. The surrounding trees and the fact it overlooks the cemetery gives it quite a peaceful air. |
