Weeded the fruit cage. What a job that was!
Insects are attracted to the allotment.
Sweet peas, by the vine, have flowered really well this year.
Not forgetting the produce that we picked today.
Forecast is for good weather for a few days so we've planned on weeding and picking and watering/feeding today, and then come down in a couple of days to potter but also fill the water butts up. Seven weeks of Lockdown have now been endured, though luckily the weather for the most part has been good. Inconvenient (and necessary) as things have been, it has given us the perfect opportunity to get on top of things early. We spent over two hours today weeding and generally tidying up and doing our best to try and eradicate, as much as possible, the huge amount of mares-tail that is springing up. On top of that though I did put a new bolt on the fruit cage. Dead-headed the Pulmineria (Soldiers and Sailors) to stop the seeds spreading. We moved a couple of Viburnams. From here.......... .......... to here. Took two hours to remove the mares-tail from just this bed - and it'll probably be back within a couple of weeks. The "Wild" bed, where the comfrey is, is looking fantastic at the moment. What with Coronavirus and the exceptional April weather (sunniest and driest April on record) we've been down the allotment probably more than we would normally this time of year. As a result we're pretty much on top of things. However, there's a week of unsettled weather and plenty of rain now forecast so this may be the last vsit for a week or so. Beds are all weeded and topped with compost so the compost bin is now back in use. The potatoes were poking through so covered them wth soil again. Dug up some of the most persistant and larger weeds growing along the edge of the allotment. Planted some peas and watered them in.......... ...............also some beans. The rose cuttings planted a couple of years ago are now almost shrub-like. The country is still in Lockdown but as far as we're concerned it's helping us get ahead ih the allotment. Admittedly the weather is a big factorbut I don't think we've ever been this much on top of the allotment by the middle of April. We've now finished adding home-made compost to most of the beds. We also spayed the weeds alongside the perimeter of the allotment with weedkiller. |
